Project Title: PMI Operational Research Concept Note Determining the effect of holes of different sizes and varying concentration of insecticide in bed nets on personal and community .

Project Description: The WHO 2013 “Guidance Notes for Estimating the Longevity of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets in Malaria Control” set several priorities for operational research. In response to this guidance we are carrying out a controlled study in the semi-field to understand the determinants of net entry for partially resistant and highly resistant (30% an 70% survival to exposure with discriminating dose of deltamethrin) Anopheles arabiensis. The WHO 2013 “Guidance Notes for Estimating the Longevity of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets in Malaria Control” set several priorities for operational research. In response to this guidance we are carrying out a controlled study in the semi-field to understand the determinants of net entry for partially resistant and highly resistant (30% an 70% survival to exposure with discriminating dose of deltamethrin) Anopheles arabiensis. The following outcome variables are measured with nets with different holes and insecticidal concentrations: 1) Personal protection to the user, 2) Overall insecticidal effect that will protect all members of the community, and 3) Predicted proportion reduction in entomological inoculation rate (EIR).
